According to the Guinness Book of Records, Sobrino de Botin is the oldest restaurant in the world. Its fascinating history begins in 1725, when the Botín couple opened a small hotel in Madrid and opened a catering establishment on the ground floor. This is evidenced by the plate that hangs at the entrance to the building: it indicates the date of the restaurant’s founding. The oven dates back to the same year and regularly serves the restaurant’s chefs to this day.
The artist Francisco de Goya worked as a waiter at the Botín café while awaiting admission to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
